Yes they are bigger nthan Africans. the biggest cage you can afford and if you have to ask about the cost you can’t afford one. Or the cage. You are talking about probably $2500 and then it will need as much time and attention as a small child for the next 30 or 40 years.
I own two eclectus…a male and a female. The female was a rescue…found in the snow. I’ve had her almost 1 year.
Working with her made me want a male…not to breed, you see I am retired so I take them to schools as ambassador animals and teach kids about dimorphism in animals. They love this interaction and have learned to play to their audiences.
The female does the brave bat…hanging upside down like a bat with both legs…she then does a “microwave” hanging upside down using one leg to wave. She does parrot purse and then she plays dead until I give her miniature CPR compressions and a kiss. she also plays peek-a-boo.
I have them in a large cage to allow them to exercise their wings. I made their cage from PVC and rubber coated wire. Dimensions are 56″ tall x 48″ long x 31″ deep. Then I have pvc covered with indoor outdoor carpeting and arranged like branches. I also made a parrot playpen from PVC.
The birds can be anywhere from $600-$1900 ea.
They are about the same size as a Congo African Gray maybe an inch bigger…depending on the species. I have a red-sided eclectus male which gets a little larger. But mostly they match the grays completely.
The best diet to get them is: Volkman’s Eclectus Diet, and you can get that online at Chirp-n-Squawk or other places. Eclectus do not do well with fortified diets. They love fruits and vegetables.
I get as variety which I chop up in a processor and then put into ice cube trays to freeze into “parrotcicles.” They have fun playing with the cubes and picking out pieces.
My female was found in a snow drift near death…with a compound fracture in the right femur and shattered beak She is completely healed now. I named her Maigjha (maya) the red papaya.
She is about 4 years old. I love her dearly.
Eclectus are the only hypoallergenic parrots as their feathers interlock and they do not produce the dander or powder.
My male is Robbie. He is about 8 months old and learning veyr quickly. He nows howls like a wolf and says: “Your fly is down.”
Eclectus are rated third among the birds for their talking abilities.
I have a shower perch that I bring them in with me when I shower. They love it…they go absolutely nuts!
The best breeder I can think of is Susie Christian-she has alo authored several books about them.
I bought Robbie from her. She hand rears the babies. She is very down to earth and easy to talk to. Her number is: 805-772-2038 and her site is eclectusville.com. When you speak to her tell her Jerry in Albuquerque recommended her…she might give you a price break. I think her males go for around $800-$900…same as african grays
Clcik on my site below to see pictures of Maigjha in the slide show. and then the birdchannel.com icon will guide you to other articles about them.
Both Papaya Maigjha and robbie are trained to poop on command. It is very easy to do and eclectus are smart, fast learners. eclectus can live about 40-50 years.
They are awesome…I’ve worked with many birds birds in my career and these are the best fit for me!
I just purchased a bird set of roller skates and a skateboard.
That depends on the sub species of eclectus parrot. The most common sub species are about the same size as the african grey. Then they get larger & a little more expensive.
Eclectus parrots require a macaw size cage. Despite them being ‘average’ in size they require the room of the large parrots & they do use all of that room.
The price of them can depend on the sub species & the area you’re in. In my area they are $450 to $900. About $5-600 is a reasonable price. They’re not that price all over the world. Prices vary a lot so unless we know where you actually are located we’re only guessing the price of them. You need to check in your own area to see how much they’re selling for. Generally breeders are cheaper than shops.
You do need to do LOADS of research on these birds. If you don’t you will find you’re going to have a lot of problems with them.
Good luck
