Any Eclectus Parrot Owners out ther. . help? 10pnts?

Question by Kylie F: Any Eclectus Parrot Owners out ther. . help? 10pnts?
Needing advise for first time ekky mum. I have on hold a beautiful female ekky that is three months old. by the time i get her she will be just over four months old. The breeder told me not to put her out on our deck during the days as she will get lonely. But i have two quakers and two tiels that also live on the deck during the daytime while im at work and we all spend the afternoons and nights inside together playing for a few hours before bed and also in the morning before i leave to go to work. i only work two days a week and the other days im in and out all the time but always home by about 3pm. My questions are
1.will 4months of age be harder to bond with
2. if she is on the deck next to the other birds isnt that better then stuck inside all day
3. Any advise for when i bring her home and getting her settled?

Thanks for any input

Answer by mattdog12
i think having her on the deck with the others is a great idea, just keep an eye on her for the first few weeks till she settles down, if she’s hand reared, then 4 months old shouldnt be a problem, as long as u be persistant and patient with it :)

good idea would be to give it some fruit while its out, if it knows it can eat while with you and be safe, it will be fine :)

Eclectus parrot questions?

Question by KnotsnSuch: Eclectus parrot questions?
Well, I am seriously considering getting an ekkie. I want a male because the females are so much more agressive. I heard though, that they like a quiet, tranquil home and aren’t much for change. That isn’t really my house, rather, camper. I live in a camper right now but I am moving to an appartment or to a cottage in michigan. I won’t get it until I move though. My mom can be loud, and sometimes yells, I have a golden retriever (who is scared of birds), a cockatiel, an a mouse, and I have a little sister that can be squealy and has the tv going a lot. And we will share a room (but the tv is not in the bedroom where I will be keeping the birds). Does this sound too hectic for an ekkie?
Also, please outline a perfect diet for an ekkie and any brands or products made for ekkies.
And, what is the minimum cage size?

Answer by Milk
A lot of that stuff about Ekkies only coping in a tranquil environment, without kids and stuff is mostly crap that was originally thought that they’re stupid because when they were 1st captured out of the wild they were scared and stood stock still, a trait of Ekkies, when upset or nervous, they stand still, completely still apart from the wildly darting pupils. No it should be fine, although it does depend somewhat on the bird, but mine comes into school (with a class of about 32 kids) almost everyday. He’s still new to it so I’m takin it slow so he doesn’t stress too much. Besides you can tell when they’re stressed coz they get these things called stress lines, its normal for them to have a few, and normal for them to have a little more than a few after the stress of changing homes but if you see barring pretty much all over the bird, cover its cage, get it into a quiet room and leave it there for a day, obviously check its food and water, common sense.

Their diets actually aren’t that hard, pretty much any natural pellet, with no artifical colours or flavours will be okay, supplement this with a seed mix and LOTS and I mean LOTS of fresh food, fresh food makes upto 70% of their diet so always have it handy and remove and replenish daily so it doesn’t spoil. Ask oyur local avaian vet for a good pellet mix. Try to avoid too many nuts because Ekkies are prone to fatty liver disease and aren’t used to a high-fat diet.

Minimum cage size is about: 2ft x 3ft, they say that width is more important than height. In cm’s its more acurate: 140h x 92w x 64d.

I hope this helps!!

I have a sun conure, would it be okay to get an eclectus parrot?

Question by ?: I have a sun conure, would it be okay to get an eclectus parrot?
Hi. I have a sun conure that is about a year and 3 months old. I have had him since he was weaning and I hand fed him for a month or so. I went to my local pet store today and saw a male Solomon Island Eclectus. I am wondering, if I kept the Sun Conure in my bed room and the Eclectus in my living room how would the Sun Conure react? Would he be jealous if he saw the Eclectus, and could I introduce them and make them friends or atleast know each other are there? Can you tell me about their personality and if they are good with other birds? And please show me an example cage that I could house him in. THANKS :)

I realize this doesn’t really answer your question, but just a warning. Eclectus parrots are prone to carrying PBFD..(beak and feather disease). IF you do buy this one, see if the pet shop will get it tested before you take it home. Especially because you have a younger bird at home.

What is going to happen to my female eclectus parrot when I go to college??

Question by xx33jennnnxx33: What is going to happen to my female eclectus parrot when I go to college??
I’m a high school junior and going to college soon. I have a 2.5 year old Solomon Island Eclectus female. She is completely bonded to me and has attacked other members of my family several times.

I don’t know what she’s going to be like when I leave. I don’t want her to get stressed. I really don’t want to leave her, but I don’t think that’s an option.

I’m thinking about getting another bird for her, but she might not get along with it.

Any ideas on what I should do??
* the college im planning on going to is an hour away…so my plan is to commute back and forth if taking her with me is not an option

* i would never give her away…shes a member of the family… I was just considering another bird just so she would have some company during the day or whenever I wasnt there

* i take care of her the most : feed her, play with her, etc. shes my little buddy, i have her out most of the day. my sister and my mom hold her alot, my dad doesnt even attempt to even touch her, but now my mom not so much because she was bitten a few times. I think this is because my bird senses the fear and that makes her bite
* and yes the biting is a fairly recent thing

* she even bit me once because I took her toy away… which is im sure a sign of dominance or her hormones kicking in
* it was probably my fault for doing this, but i took her toy away because i was going out and had to put her in the cage…but i picked up the toy first

*i know its important to ignore the behavior when she bites or something similar. but when that happens to my mom, she reacts before thinking. i dont know what to do so my mom doesnt do this. ive trained my bird she knows whats good and whats bad, but with my mom giving reactions like screaming or something when she is bitten, that undos everything that i taught her if that makes sense

* but thank you soo much for all the great info… i really appreciate it

Some dorms allow small caged pets. If your’s doesn’t you should consider moving into an apartment or move in with a room mate.

Is this a suitable diet for an eclectus parrot?

Question by Meleah: Is this a suitable diet for an eclectus parrot?
To all those bird lovers out there! Here is the diet i have my ekky on, do you think it is a suitable diet? What am i missing?

I put in diced mixed veges, which include carrot, zucchini, red chilli’s, red capsicums etc etc. It stays in there all day, as he likes to take his time eating. He is indoors, and the house stays cool. Of an evening i put in fresh diced fruit for two hours, throughout the day he has Eclectus pellets and dehydrated fruit. And as his training treat i’m going to start using sunflower seed. I use a calcium suppliement once a week in his water, and also a vitamin and mineral suppliement in his food once a week. I was doing this daily but have been told not to do that, as i am overdoing it with the added vitamins and minerals – as there are alot of it in his pellets.
Thanks birdsandbooks:)you’re great.

The man – That was very useful information Thank you.

Why is my Eclectus Parrot Scratching his Neck?

Question by maggic: Why is my Eclectus Parrot Scratching his Neck?
Long story short.

I got this eclectus plucked and aggressive, completely took him off coloured pellets and nuts and he grew back almost all his chest feathers after eating only fresh food, a few months later I sold him hoping he could have a female. Turns out he went to the wrong home so I bought him back after 6 months and during the time he was fed pellets.

I got him back home now, he was missing his tail feathers and is only lightly plucked around his chest but he keeps scratching his neck on both sides which is the main reason for lost feathers. Other than that he’s as happy as can be, never ever bites me and is full of energy.

Anyone might know why he’s scratching his neck so much?

He was also toe tapping a little but it seems to be going away, he’s now eating cooked beans, peas, brown rice, apples, grapes, yellow/green peppers, dark lettuc, spinach, parsley and other fruits which he ate before when i first got him and had no problems.

Currently don’t have money for the expensive vet in my area but I’m saving up.

Answer by kim
The scratching could be an allergic reaction to the pellets, any food he’s eaten or something in the environment. He could also be itchy if he has new pins coming through or his skin is dry. Lots of baths will help him with his itch, a little aloe & water spray will also help & getting back to his natural diet. It may take a little time to recoup from his previous home & stop scratching & get some healthy food into him.

Toe tapping can be common with pellet eating but it can also be from a calcium deficiency or fresh food gone bad. Because he has toe tapped it does mean he is sensitive to certain foods, not all ekkies are sensitive to foods they eat. If he isn’t toe tapping now with you then I wouldn’t worry to much.

I would also suggest you make up a care sheet to go with the next buyer & make it clear to them of the diet they must put the bird on to keep him healthy. Perhaps this will get rid of some people who just want them for their beauty & once they’ve read the care sheet they may put the bird in the ‘too hard basket’. Good for the bird because then he has a better chance of getting a good home.

Good luck

My female eclectus parrot laied an egg at the bottom of her cage?

Question by : My female eclectus parrot laied an egg at the bottom of her cage?
Its really small and its just sitting there. I also have a male eclectus so he might have fertalized it, but she dosn’t even have a nesting box yet. Also ever since she laied the egg she has been on the opposite side of the cage just sitting there and not moving. She is usually very playful. She almost looks sad. its been this way for a good 3 hours. Can anybody tell me what to do with the egg and what to do with her. at least untill our nesting box comes. Ps. She is not sitting on the egg either.

help my eclectus parrot is biting hard!?

Question by *~* Princess *~*: help my eclectus parrot is biting hard!?
He is my 1st parrot and 1 yr old, i’ve had him 1 week. I’ve had him 1 week and he’s very tame. When he’s out he’s very loving and when he’s on the bottom perch he’s fine to get out. But on the higher perch he bites me so hard, edges away and gets his feathers up! I read this is territorial biting so i’ve said No and qalk away so he knows this doesn’t get attention, then praise when he’s good.com Am I doing it exactly right? Will it just take time if I carry on this training? Aptly named he’s an angel when out or on the cage floor, loves to be out and snuggles. It.s just on the perch he draws blood (although i speak softly and show no fear).
many thanks for your advice! i’ll try moving the perch down as he only beaks except on the perch where he makes me bleed.com He seems attached to me, so I’ll see how the lowering goes.com

Answer by mockingbird
ahah! i know what’s wrong.

“when he’s on the bottom perch he’s fine to get out. But on the higher perch he bites me so hard”

when a bird’s eyes are higher than your, the bird feels dominant. when teh bird’s eyes are lower, the bird feels submissive.
if a bird is terrified of everything, it is a good idea to move it higher.
if a bird is like your — keep it low!
if you put 2 birds in one cage, the dominat one will take the high perch and fight the other one off the perch.
even humans have something like this: the king’s throne was always high up!
not all birds are as senstive to height as yours is, but sometimes you get one like yours.

you can saw off the legs of the cage if the cage is on legs to lower the cage. that is recomended.
always keep your bird below you.

i’m usually againt overt displays of dominance against birds, but it’s one thing for me to let my gentle, forgiving, female cockatiel feel dominant and quite another for you bird. you need to be the dominat one.

that does not mean you get to yell or punish the bird, such things make you not dominant but “predator”. but other behaviors, such as clipping the wings, making the bird depend you you, are probably good for your bird.
