Is an Eclectus Parrot a good choice for a companion pet?
Question by amber: Is an Eclectus Parrot a good choice for a companion pet?
They are beautiful and I have had some experience with other pet birds…….There is this cute little female at the pet shop………..but I can’t tell if she is molting or plucking…….the first time I saw her she was gorgeous….she just kinda looks ragged now. So anyway, she has a sweet personality and is very talkative………I like her…………I also like male Eclectus but can not find one in the area. The bird is $ 1000. Has anyone has any experience with Eclectus parrots….Thanks

will tell you what you might need to know about them. the most important thing about eclectus parrots is their diets. You need to feed them healthy human foods, sprouts, fruit & veg etc.. They do poorly on pellets or seed.
There is some debate on whether males or females are better. There are a lot of people who have females & they’re just a good as the males so don’t listen to everything you read about the females on the net. they’re not all that bad.
You can also check out the forum

& get some more advice & info from eclectus owners.
Young ekkies do often look very ragged & if she’s going through her first ‘heavy’ moult she might look like that for some time. The best way to tell if she’s plucking is if the feathers on the ground or cage floor are chewed badly or have blood on the tips. If they’re clean & not looking chewed (they can still look rough, just not chewed) then it might just be a moult.

Can you house a male and female eclectus parrot together?
Question by Jhykyy: Can you house a male and female eclectus parrot together?
Hi, lately I’ve been looking into different bird species, and I’m simply awestruck by the beauty, intelligence, demeanor and striking sexual dimorphism of the eclectus parrot. I will not be purchasing these beauties any time soon however, as I think it would be a terrible idea for a bird-keeping novice to own one.
Until I can be fortunate enough to have them, I’ve been satisfying myself by reading about them. One day I would like to own one of each gender, as I cannot bring myself to decide between the two.
However, since I am new to the wonderful world of birds, I do have a few questions.
Everything that I’ve read about breeding them mentions a nest box. I understand that the nest box is necessary for warmth and privacy. However, I couldn’t find any articles that mentioned simply male and female cage mates.
What would happen if you were to not provide them with a nest box? Would the eggs end up being infertile?
I know that females can lay infertile eggs without a male present, but that is the extent of my breeding knowledge.
Is breeding inevitable?
Is it possible to house them together without breeding if I don’t provide them with a nest box or nest box like place?
Is there a specific “mating season” that captive birds follow?
Is it possible for a bird to get neutered/spayed?
Do birds respond well to anesthesia?
Are my hopes of housing the two birds together useless?
If I were to get two cages, could I place them near each other?
Would the parrots be lonely if they each had their own cage?
Would I have to get two males and two females, or ultimately decide between the two genders if that was the case?
Answers to any of these questions would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read and possibly respond to my question.

No you can not get a bird neutered they can’t do that to birds so if you have them together they will mate.Even without the box they will lay eggs and try to sit on them .

That is a really nice cage for an Eclectus. I had a male a few years ago. You will love your bird and this cage may spoil you, but they do last a long time. You could actually go a little shorter and it would be easier to clean, no stooping. Enjoy!

best housing for an eclectus parrot.?
Question by Haylesss: best housing for an eclectus parrot.?
okay, so i am looking at buying a eclectus parrot. i have researched a ton however there is one thing that i have researhed that i am unsure about. it has said that they do not like there cages/houses in loud places because they like to go to sleep early. i have thought about it and have options in terms of where the parrot may be kept. (i also realize that they need to be house all the time and anywhere the house may be will not affect this because my parrot will be out all the time.
option a for housing. keep the cage in my bed room and have a perch for it on the main floor where all the action is where he/she can hang out during the day time with people. and have a perch in the basement as well. than when bed time comes bring the bird up stairs for a good night sleep
option b for housing. have the cage on the main floor. (keep in mind my house can get a little loud during the day) and the bird will always be there.
thank you so much!
what do you think would be the best for my parrot?

Most eclectus parrots I have seen are $ 700 upwards here in Australia, and you want a big cage for free as well as a bird costing less than a third of its value ? I think you are dreaming. Everyone knows the worth of these parrots. If you got one with cage for the cost of a cage only then I would hazzard a guess there would be a serious health issue with that bird.
I think you need to save more money or do more research, or wait a very long time.

Peek-a-boo is always a favorite.
You might also try rolling a ball back and forth.
These are pretty safe games and parrots seem to enjoy them!

Need advice from Eclectus Parrot owners..?
Question by audiqueen: Need advice from Eclectus Parrot owners..?
I’m picking up my new 4 month old male eclectus soon. I already know what not to feed him, its only going to be fresh fruits and veggies, along with some homecooked food and parrot seeds. This is okay?
And also, I have a 5 year old pomeranian dog. How are the Eclectus around small dogs? Do dogs cause any illnesses to them?
Thanks!

Answer by kim
Hi
I am glad you’re picking him up at 4 months old. Some people sell them ‘weaned’ at 3 months old & the owners have a lot of problems with them because they have only just weaned or been forced weaned & develop screaming behaviours.
Your off to a good start for his diet. You should add sprouts to the diet. They are natural, loaded with all the essential vitamins & minerals & I don’t know an ekkie that doesn’t like sprouts :D
For more ideas of food & dieting you can check this out:
http://www.eclectusparrots.net/diets.html
It’s very important to give him as large a variety of fruit & veg as possible. Scatter various bowls on his cage floor as this will encourage him to forage & try new foods. At his age he my pick on & off but it won’t take him long to start trying everything & start to enjoy his variety.
You will only know how your ekkie & dog are together. It depends on them. When you first bring home your ekkie leave him in his cage to settle for a few days & get used to his new environment. After this you can start to introduce yourself & your dog slowly. The dogs bite & dogs saliva can be toxic to the birds. As long as they’re supervised together (even if they get along well) then you at least be able to keep an eye on them & make sure your dog isn’t chewing or licking him.

Does anyone have a list of bird breeders (that include those that breed eclectus parrots)?
Question by Clumsical ~Betta Freak~: Does anyone have a list of bird breeders (that include those that breed eclectus parrots)?
I am planning on getting an eclectus parrot sometime in the future (probably not the near future, but I guess you can say I’m already planning it). Anyways, I want to get from a breeder (I find it harder and harder to trust pet stores, especially with larger birds), and I want to find a list of them. I found one website that has a large list of bird breeders, but the list doesn’t include eclectus.

see http://www.birdbreeders.com/breedersearch.aspx Eclectus are about 30% of the way down the list of bird types.

Do eclectus parrots tend to get used to just one person?
Question by Charlotte: Do eclectus parrots tend to get used to just one person?
I own a female eclectus parrot and I have had her for about three years. She is very nice to me but she seems to be nasty to other people. Is this the proper nature of eclectus parrots? I have heard that the males are quite nicer than the females. Also she does not seem to have a very warm personality even though she is eccentric. Are eclectus parrots independent natured?
Best answer:
Answer by skydanzer400
Developing a bond with one person more than others is a common trait of most parrots. Not just the Eclectus. And, almost all parrots tend to be very independent. Starting the socialization process at a very young age is very important with all parrots and is especially helpful with Eclectus. Both genders can be very loving while younger but can tend to be more aloof and standoffish as they near sexual maturity. You didn’t say which type you have, whether the Vos Marie or the Solomon Island. It is thought that the SI”s tend to be a bit more laid back but bottom line is, they are all parrots with all the pros and cons that come with them. There is no fool proof preventative but socialization with more different people, throughout the bird’s lifetime can make it better. All you can do is to have as many trusted friends and family members interact with her as much as possible. However, they do need to be folks who are not afraid of getting a nip and who fully understand how to interact with parrots. This is truly a case of “the more, the merrier. Here is a link that may be of some help to you. http://prettybirds.net/eclectusparrots.htm
