Since you no longer wanted the animals you wanted before, what happens if you decide you no longer want the eclectus. Eclectus are not a first time bird, nor are they an easy to care for bird. They're extremely messy, require home made healthy foods daily, full time care from humans as well as a load of interactive toys. You must be able to provide all of this all of the time you have the bird.

The smell will depend on the care given. If cared for properly & cleaned properly you won't have a smell.

eclectus only develop dust if they're not cleaned & cared for properly. Regular bathing to keep their feathers clean & dust free, especially during moulting seasons & if you live in a dry place them buy a humidifier. Dry air will cause a dusty bird. Regular dusting of the house will also help. I have never heard of someone being allergic to eclectus parrots before.

Yes they make a mess, a hell of a mess & there is no avoiding it!! You need to clean regularly to keep the mess down.

They only smell and are as messy as you let them be. Do you know about their digestive system? the proper foods to feed? how much fiber they need? why do you want an Eclectus?

This is what you gotta do:
1) Tell him you will clean the cage once a week.
2) Tell him that YOU and only YOU will clean up the mess.
3) Tell him that if you keep it clean, allergies won't be MUCH of a problem.
4) Prove your research.
5) Live up to your word.

If you are a first time bird owner, I wouldn't start out with an eclectus. You say you have read up on them, but they (all birds really) are a lot of work. Are you prepared to cook and/or prepare the sufficient amount of fresh foods that eclectus parrots need on a daily basis, as well as provide a diet that is appropriate for their longer intestinal tract? Are you ready to clean their cages, and the surrounding area on a daily basis?

You also say you have wanted a bunch of animals in the past, but figured you didn't want those animals anymore...how do you know you won't get tired of the bird then start to neglect it? Properly cared for, it can live for over 30 years. Are you ready for that commitment? It sounds like you're younger too, who would take care of your bird when you go to school?

I'm VERY glad to hear you've done research on eclectus, but perhaps you should try a parakeet or cockatiel first.
