how much do quality eclectus parrots cost? Do they make friendly companions? Hi, it’s just coming up to my 16th birthday and im looking to buy a very special bird that will hopefully be friendly and a very good companion for years to come!! Do you suggest that an eclectus parrot is an ideal bird to have? and if so how much do good quality eclectus birds cost? Comments |

Eclectus parrots cost around $900 each and yes they do make friendly companions and are easily trained and hand tamed.
Cost depends on where you live–they can range from about 700-1200. You need to be sure to check out the breeder very closely–be sure they let the parents help raise the babies and that they don’t take them from the parents too early. The other thing to keep in mind is that eclectus have very specific diets–not hard, just specific. They shouldn’t have pellets but should have lots of fresh foods. If you get one, join a list on eclectus (or ekkies as we call them) to help learn about them. But that said, I have two ekkies who are just wonderful–I love them. They are smart, curious and loveable. THey do not like to cuddle like some birds but do love to be with you and are wonderful companions.

We have 2 in our flock, a male and a female. They are great birds. The female is very laid back and gentle. The male is very curious and on the go. He is into everything like a 3 year old child! Each bird is an individual though, so personalities will all be different from bird to bird.
Ekkies are extremely LOUD, so be prepared. They can make god awful screams. They are excellent talkers. They require lots of fresh fruit and veggies. We also sprout seeds for ours. An all seed or pelleted diet can cause serious problems for your bird. Ekkies have a longer digestive tract than other parrots and require more fiber in their diets. We chop fresh foods twice daily for them. A dietary dificency can cause feather discoloration (wet,greasy looking feathers or a change in pigment), kidney problems, and even death. Our ekkies are very messy eaters- they love to eat and do it with vigor. They paint walls and throw food with gusto. Living with birds means living with mess!
Ekkies can live 30 years or more- so this will be a responsibility for a long time. They are highly intelligent birds, and they need lots of stimulation and space.
Depending on your area, and how many are available- you may pay between $700 to $ 1400 a piece. Some subspecies are more readily available and may cost less. Some like the Vosmarie, may cost a little more. Make sure you read everything you can on the species before you purchase. Also make sure that you will be able to dedicate yourself to such a HUGE responsibility. Good luck if you decide they are right for you. Eclectus are wonderful, intelligent, beautiful birds.
