Male or female Eclectus parrot?

Category: Eclectus Parrot Forum

I have finally decided to get a eclectus parrot(after many hours of research). I personally prefer the plumage of the male but I would like to know each genders general temperament and personality. Also could you talk about experiences with these sorts of parrots?

Thanks

I used to own a female and I hand fed many eclectus babies
for a friend, the females seemed to be a little higher strung than the males but not that noticable…especially if you only had one as a pet these really are beautiful birds and they seem to be calmer overall than the amazons
try to get a hand fed bird
    good luck!

Regardless of the things you hear, females are as good as males. Both temperaments are identical. Of course that doesn’t mean there isn’t a bossier or meaner or more highly stung female out there, they’re around too but not often.

They’re definitely very calm birds compared to any other bird, they’re a whole family bird & rarely bond to one person. If they do bond to one person.

Their personalities are amazing (both female & male) they’re very talkative, very playful & require a great deal of out of cage time to keep them stimulated & not bored.

With eclectus parrots, the female is definitely more suitable for ‘Alpha male’ type people because they tend to call the shots in eclectus society.

Eclectus birds are gorgeous, very intelligent, good talkers and amongst the least noisy of the bigger parrots. However, they require a more specific diet and they require a special understanding of their characters in order for them to really flourish in captivity.

You’ll honestly need to do a lot more research and reading. They can live to about 50years and more often than not, parrot owners can’t really give their pets a good home for the rest of their lives.

I love my male eclectus Emmett. He’s a loved member of the family and there are always people at home so he’s hardly ever lonely. If you can commit the time, effort and money (a good cage and quality food will not be cheap), then you will see the Eclectus is indeed a wonderful parrot.

    Good luck.

We have one of each, and their personalities are like night and day. Everything I read before I got these two birds was pretty close to the truth about their personalities, but remember each bird is an individual. Just because one persons bird acts a certain way, doesn’t mean every one’s will be that way.
Our female is very quiet, she never screeches unless cosmo (our male) bites her. She is content just sitting in your lap. She has so far been partial to only me, I am the only person who can get her out of the cage. She will sit with anyone though. I have friends that come over and she will sit on their shoulder or lap.
Our male, cosmo, is quite different. He is all over the place exploring and getting into stuff. He will chew up anything! He has to be in the middle of whatever I am doing- he is very curious about everything. He talks alot, and alot of times he gets very loud. Our female, cinnamon, can talk, but doesn’t. Cosmo yammers on and on and on…. He loves noises and has picked up the microwave beeping, so that everytime I walk into the kitchen, he beeps. He will let anyone hold him. He has never bitten any body. If he gets upset, he will bang his beak on whatever he’s mad at. Cosmo is like having a 2 year old child, he keeps me very busy. Good luck with your choice…

I have never owned an eclectus, but I did a lot of research on them when I was looking for the right parrot for my family (got a TAG). Everything I read said that the females are more possesive and aggresive. The males are more laid back. Like I said I have no personal experiance, just letting you know what I have read.
