My Female Eclectus parrot won’t stop screaming, can anyone please help me?

Category: Eclectus Parrot Forum

I own a 1 year old female Eclectus parrot. She has a screaming problem. I was told they were quiet birds. She has a roomy cage, I rotate her toys every 2 weeks, and I take her out every day. I don’t expect her to be quiet all the time because she is a parrot but she screams for no reason. Even when I cover her because she is screaming excessivly, she still screams with the cover on. She also doesn’t have certain times of the day when she screams, which I know some parrots do. She just screams for no reason, at any time of the day, and its ear scattering. The only time she is quiet is at night. When she starts screaming I cover her cage and then when she’s quiet, I’ll uncover her and she’ll start screaming again. I don’t know what else to do. She talks, is very tame, and sweet but I need to try and control her screaming. Could she be lonely for another bird? Anyone with any type of parrot experience please help me. I need some good advice. Thanks Alot.

Next time she screams cover her cage with a blanket it’s really helped me with my bird and his squaking.

Most likely she is scared. My birds did that, but maybe you should take her to a vet, just in case. It ciould be nerves, or something more serious.

Hi, I have had 5 eclectus parrots and in my experience, they only scream when they need something or are warning you of something. Is her cage in a window where she sees people outside walking by? That would cause screaming. Is she lonely? Does she have enough to eat and drink? Does she need attention? There is usually a good reason they scream. You just have to figure out what it is she is screaming about. If she isn’t in a window or doesn’t have any fearful reasons, she may be lonely to not be with you in the same room. Does she scream if she is in the same room with you? Yet in her cage? There is always a reason they are screaming. Our job is to figure out what that is. Do you have access to other parrots owners. Go to landofvos.com and read about eclectus and there is probably an article there that will help you! Good luck! Tracy

Tracy is right. usually ekkies that scream have a very good reason too.

For how long do you take her out, how long have you had her for & has she screamed since you’ve had her?

Please don’t cover her for screaming. If it’s excessive simply shift a cage into a separate room so you can shut the door but covering up is not a good idea. Way too many people think it’s a great solution but all it is is a temp fix solution, never resolves the actual problem & causes them to lack the daylight & sunlight they require on a daily basis for health reasons.

My first concern is what are you feeding her? Most all pellet diets for ekkies regardless of whether they’re natural or not can cause havoc with their health. This problem is all too common for many ekkies as a lot of people don’t realise just how delicate their dietry balance is. A screaming ekkie can be due due the incorrect diet, lacking or too many vits/mins taken in daily.

How is she when she’s with you? Is she settled & her usual self with you or out of her cage? She may have become attached to you so much that she’s screaming for you. This is more common in the females than the males. She’s 1 year old so she’s also still a baby.

If it’s recent you need to also look at anything at all that may have changed in or around her cage, on you, throughout the parts of the house she visits. It can be a petty tiny little thing that you haven’t noticed that has upset her. Does she have new toys? Perches, bowls placed in different places or replaced? My ekkie can sometimes freak at new toys on his stand. I have to place it somewhere visible for him to be able to see & let him get close to it & check it out in his own good time. Before he’ll accept it. A really weird fear he has is for the colour red LOL hate to introduce him to a female!

Do you have some interactive toys to keep her occupied? These are a MUST for all ekkie. You can buy baby & toddler ones that make all kinds of sounds, words etc. Ekkies go crazy over them & can spend hours in a day keeping themselves occupied with their fav stuff.

Ekkies are not a needy bird if their perches & cages are large enough, they have an abundance of toys & a toy box to rummage through.

Look for an avian vet that has worked on eclectus parrots many times in the past. Even a general avian vet can often lead you in the wrong direction if they’re not familiar with this species bird. They’re not a ‘general’ parrot when it comes to health.

Landofvos is a brilliant website for eclectus. What do you do when she screams? maybe you are accidnetally giving her attention when she screams, so she knows it gets your attention. Just ignore her when she screams, and when she’s quiet, playing or talking praise her lots and give treats.

Hi does she have enough time out of her cage because you said that ” Even when I cover her because she is screaming excessivly, ” is she still in her cage and your covering her ?? Maybe she needs more out time.. My Ekkie is only locked in his cage at night and on Tuesday and Friday for 7 hours I have to work lol… He has play stuff everwhere and he is more content to just sit with me and watch tv..Try to feed me and ask whats for dinner.. So I am going to say that she needs much more attention leave her cage open let her roam when your home when she starts to scream pick her up go to another room talk to her softly and cuddle her this should help you need to find what is going to alleviate the problem for you and her.. Good luck
