They only have one bird, and its in a pretty big cage, and its Red & Blue just like most normal Female Eclectus’s, and just recently had two eggs. One was a week ago or too. They’re about an inch in diameter. We are wondering how could she have eggs with no male? And what is it, and wheres it coming from, please help. Comments![]() |

My friends did this as well. There is nothing in the egg. After a couple weeks it did it again, it started bleeding, and died.
immaculate conception?
birds just like chickens lay eggs its just a natural process that doesn’t occur to often with “Parrots” in particular, the eggs a dud.
yeah that person had the right answer. hens lay eggs without a rooster. They just arent fertilized. I have a female cockatiel who will lay eggs at times. You have to be careful if it becomes chronic. First of all leave the eggs in there until she refuses to sit on them. Then if she continues you might have to modify her intake of fresh foods, and the amount of light, etc. There are alot of other ways I have read about in a couple of yahoo communities I am in for birds.
it is very stressful for a bird to lay an egg, if you take it away, she becomes depressed, but also, if she keeps laying eggs..like that other answer you got, she can die, its called being “eggbound”…they can get stuck, she needs alittle bit of a different diet to aid her body in making eggs…you should find a bird vet…most cat and dog vets know NOTHING about birds…trust me on that..please…find a reptile and bird vet…and do some research online…find a eclectus breeder and ask then what they think…im sure there is a breeder out there that would gladly give you some advice on keeping your eclectus healthy…”bird” people are very caring when it comes to stuff like that…goodluck
Birds lay eggs. If there is no male, there is no chick inside, because it’s not fertilized. Females will lay eggs with no mate. It’s just like chickens.
this egg is empty without a male
There are more than one species of eclectus parrots. Your friends bird sound like she is a red sided eclectus.
When a bird lays an egg it means that she is ovulating and is an indication that she is a sexually mature bird. A male is not required for ovulation. However, males are needed for fertile eggs.
Female eclectus are famous for excessive egg laying. This can be harmful to their health. If the hen is not on a healthy diet, lacks good muscle tone and has any health concerns at all, excessive egg laying can lead to egg binding and other sexual problems. This can make the hen very sick and can cause death.
In the wild it is unlikely that a hen would produce more than two clutches of eggs. A clutch of eggs is what a hen lays at one time. Egg interval and clutch size vary by species, with smaller species laying bigger clutches and having a shorter egg laying interval. If something should happen to the eggs or babies then the hen lays a second clutch. However, in captivity the conditions that encourage sexual activity are ever present and hens may lay eggs continuously. This will eventually harm their health.
If the eggs are left with this hen for her to incubate it will help delay another clutch. Yet, they must be careful that her eggs do not break and that she sits for the entire incubation period or longer. Once she abandons the eggs, they should make every effort to convince her that it is no longer breeding season. In short this would mean taking her out and way from her home frequently. If she is clipped she can be taken on picnics and other outings. If she is flighted she can be taken to an agreeable friend’s home for a play day. Her sleeping cage should be moved to a different location each night. These are a couple of things that tell her body that the time is not safe for laying eggs. There are more things that can be done, this is a start. They should also make sure she is eating well and developing strong muscle tone, in the event that she lays more eggs. If she continue to lay eggs to the point that her health may be affected, their vet has ways to help prevent egg laying and the vet should be consulted. They may want to take her in for a routine check up once she is off the eggs and have her health evaluated.
